In 1935 a bascule bridge was constructed over the Caen Canal near the little town of Bénouville between Ouistreham and Caen.
That bridge is today known as the Pegasus Bridge after its code name during the Overlord Operation during the Second World War, ie on the night between the 5° and the 6° of June, 1944.
You may have seen the movie, The Longest Day. That was the D-day for many young men who died.
The original bridge can today be seen at a museum, as it was replaced by a new, larger one in 1994, for the 50° anniversary of the Battle of Normandy.
Today young men cross the bridge much more easily than in 1944.
