Vanhetessaan ihminen alkaa muistella lapsuutensa tapahtumia.

The flight

The geese had escaped and were walking around in a nearby corn field, enjoying each moment of freedom, but when they saw their owner coming to take them away, they turned obiediently around and followed him back home.

Their flight didn't last long, and never did they fly.

The Medal

When the vessel that had unloaded salt in Fécamp left on Thursday evening I happened to be in the neighbourhood. Alas, I was a little late to take a picture of it before it had left the channel so I won't get a bronze, silver or gold medal for the picture even if the clouds were black and the light was playing on the surface of the sea.

My Medal is just red. And I got it!

(Medal is the name of the vessel.)

The fox

Isopeikko, learning what happened to a little fox, wrote a story. I have translated it - without permission - as most of my visitors do not yet speak Finnish. It would be worth while to learn it, as Isopeikko's tales are something very special.

Here it comes. It's called Freedom.

A little fox, almost a baby, is hiding under green leaves. Its small heart beats unregularly, as if wishing by beating to correct the weakness that makes the little fox tire so easily.

Under the green leaves there's shelter and security. The little fox puts its head between its paws and lets the dreams flow in its mind. The dreams tell about the joys of life, about the burrow and the happy first steps of the brotherhood. In its dreams it sees itself playing noisilly with its brothers while learning to hunt for mice and to make fox jumps.

The little fox wakes up. It sits up and looks around. Close to it, under the same leaves there's another fox. This fox is deep black, the end of its tail is gleaming white and in its eyes you can see the stars of the profound space. The black fox smiles softly, revealing sharp teeth, white like the stars.

The black fox tells the little fox that it has come to show it the way to the fox woods where foxes are completely free. The little fox raises its paw and looks at the chain gleaming like silver, which binds it to life. The little fox looks at the black fox for a long time, sees the truth in its eyes, smiles and tired it lays down on the side.

The teeth of the black fox gleam shortly cutting off the bounds to life. The little fox rises up and belly to belly with the black fox, it follows a new path to the new fox woods.

Lonely

I don't know when, I don't know why nor how, but I know where a perhaps one month old fox stood face to face with Death.

In our western cultures we're not accustomed to see and to cope with death. Recently a French municipality prohibited dying as there was no place left in the graveyard!

Old and sick people die in hospitals, not at home surrounded by a loving family.

Living kills but dying is forbidden.

But nobody had told so to this little baby fox so one day, or one night, it stood face to face with Death and fell down, feeling very lonely, in a quiet place in the garden, where DD found it some time after the flies.

Dying is forbidden, talking about it is even worse. And you should never show it as it's not accepted by the living ones.

***

Please do not click on the picture unless you're ready to see what death looks like on a little fox. My apologies to Isopeikko, the creator of the tales about the bear, the fox and the little baby wolf, but I didn't choose where and when Death came to this little one. And maybe we should learn to know and to accept that dying is something natural, that it will happen to everyone of us. Just like sorrow and loneliness.

Cruising

Saturday morning, it was almost noon, I was donwtown, trying to find a t-shirt to buy. I heard the phone ring in my bag.

Hi, it's Lisbet, we're in Dieppe. We passed Fécamp at half past six this morning but with the low tide we didn't come in.

So I grabbed half a dozen of t-shirts (I had found one that I liked and now they're all alike) of different colours, and drove up to Dieppe, having told DD that he could go alone and buy what was needed for the evening meal.

Jarmo and Lisbet bought a sailing boat in Turkey and have been travelling northward for a year, spending the winter months near Carcassonne where Jarmo has family.

Even though the Finns are not vikings they have travelled a lot.

The only problem with mine is that they're northbound, thus cruising the other way round.

Thank you Lisbet and Jarmo, it was wonderful to see you. Please come back again.

Ilkivaltaa

Rouenin linja-autovarikko on siirtynyt tästä talosta pois jo aikoja sitten.

Encore!
